How to Contour and Highlight Like a Pro

Contouring and highlighting can enhance your facial features and create a sculpted look. Contouring involves using a matte bronzer or contour powder to create shadows on your face, giving the illusion of a more defined structure. Highlighting, on the other hand, involves using a shimmery highlighter to bring forward the high points of your face, adding dimension and a natural glow.

Choosing the Right Products

To contour, choose a matte bronzer or contour powder that is two shades darker than your skin tone. For highlighting, use a shimmery highlighter that complements your skin tone. Highlighters come in various shades, including champagne, gold, and pearl, so select one that suits your complexion.

Contouring Techniques

To contour, start by applying the contour powder to the hollows of your cheeks. To locate the hollows, make a fish face by sucking in your cheeks. Apply the contour powder in a diagonal line from your ear down towards the corner of your mouth. Blend well to avoid harsh lines. Next, contour along your jawline to create a more defined jaw. Finally, apply contour powder to the sides of your nose to make it appear slimmer.

Highlighting Techniques

For highlighting, apply the highlighter to the high points of your face, such as the tops of your cheekbones, the bridge of your nose, the center of your forehead, the brow bone, and the Cupid's bow. These areas naturally catch the light and enhance your features. Use a fan brush or a small fluffy brush to apply the highlighter for a precise application.

Blending and Setting

Blending is crucial for a natural look. Use a damp beauty sponge or a clean blending brush to blend the contour and highlight seamlessly into your skin. Blend in gentle, circular motions to avoid any harsh lines. Once blended, set your makeup with a translucent powder to ensure it stays in place all day.

Additional Tips

Contouring and highlighting can seem intimidating at first, but with practice, you'll become more comfortable with the techniques. Start with a light hand and gradually build up the intensity. Remember, makeup is about enhancing your natural beauty, so have fun experimenting and finding what works best for you.
